What Counts as a Watermark?

A watermark is any deliberately added visual element layered over a photo to identify its source, owner, or licensing state. Common forms include semi-transparent logos in a corner, tiled patterns across the whole image, date stamps from cameras, copyright notices, and social-media handles. Stock photo agencies, professional photographers, and agencies use them to discourage unauthorized reuse.

ImgShift targets these overlay-style watermarks using the Aliyun VIAPI RemoveImageWatermark model. The model was trained to recognize typical watermark patterns and reconstruct a plausible version of the pixels hidden beneath.

Common Use Cases

• Reuse your own photos. If you lost the original of a photo you uploaded to a CMS that auto-stamped it, this tool can often recover a clean version.
• Clean up camera date stamps. Older point-and-shoot cameras burned "2024-12-25" into the bottom-right corner. Remove it in one click.
• Repair scanned documents. Library stamps, "CONFIDENTIAL" overlays, and registration marks can be lifted from scanned pages.
• Restore preview images. Some platforms downscale and watermark images shown to non-logged-in users. The watermark can be removed (subject to your right to use the image).

Important: only remove watermarks from images you own or have explicit permission to use. Stripping a watermark from a stock photo you haven't licensed is copyright infringement and against our terms of service.

How the AI Decides What to Erase

RemoveImageWatermark is an inpainting model. It works in two stages:

1. Detection. A segmentation head identifies regions that look like watermarks — typically low-opacity, repeating, or text-shaped regions whose histogram differs from the surrounding area.
2. Reconstruction. For each detected pixel, the model predicts what the underlying image probably looks like, using context from nearby non-watermarked regions.

This works well for typical semi-transparent overlays but struggles with opaque logos covering large areas, or with watermarks that weave through complex backgrounds (hair, foliage, small text).

What This Tool Cannot Do

A few honest limitations to set expectations:

• Arbitrary object removal. This isn't a magic eraser for people, cars, or large elements. For that you'd need a mask-based inpainting tool (roadmapped for a later batch).
• Large opaque logos. A 200×80 pixel solid logo with strong edges is harder to reconstruct convincingly than a faint corner watermark.
• Watermarks that cross faces or text. The reconstructed pixels under the watermark may look slightly off if the underlying content is detailed.
• Multiple watermarks stacked. Two overlapping overlays can confuse the detector.

If the result isn't good enough, try cropping the image to the watermarked region first, or running it through our Enhance Photo tool afterward to clean up residual artifacts.

Is it legal to remove watermarks?

It depends on who owns the image. Removing a watermark from a photo you own or have a license to use is fine. Removing a watermark to evade a stock photo agency's licensing — i.e., using the photo without paying — is copyright infringement in most jurisdictions and against ImgShift's terms.

What file formats are accepted?

JPG, PNG, and BMP up to 3 MB. The output is always PNG (lossless) so the reconstructed pixels stay sharp. WebP, GIF, and HEIC aren't supported — convert them first with Image to JPG.

Will the result look perfect?

Usually for small, semi-transparent watermarks on simple backgrounds. Large opaque logos, watermarks across detailed regions, or stacked overlays may leave visible artifacts. Always preview before downloading.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

Yes. Remove Watermark is an AI tool, so the image is sent to our AI provider (Aliyun VIAPI in Shanghai). The file is processed in memory and deleted within 5 minutes. We never store, share, or use your images for training. For 100% local processing, use the browser-based tools under Edit instead.

Can it remove a face or person from a photo?
