What Does It Mean to Colorize a Photo?

Colorizing a photo means taking a grayscale (black-and-white) image and adding plausible color to every pixel. The result isn't a "true" historical record — unless the original colors were known — but a believable, modern-looking reconstruction based on what the AI has learned from millions of color photos.

ImgShift uses the Aliyun VIAPI ColorizeImage model, which was trained on a diverse dataset of portraits, landscapes, street scenes, and documents. It recognizes common subjects (skin tones, sky, grass, brick, wood) and applies appropriate hues while preserving the luminance structure of the original.

Why Colorize Old Photos?

Black-and-white photography is beautiful, but it can also feel emotionally distant. Adding color often makes historical images feel immediate and real — suddenly the people in a 1940s portrait look like someone you might know. Common reasons our users colorize photos:

  • Family history: Restore life to grandparents' and great-grandparents' portraits before sharing them with younger relatives.
  • Social media: Make archival images pop in feeds where color dominates.
  • Education: Help students connect with historical events by presenting them in color.

How AI Photo Colorization Works

Modern colorization models are convolutional neural networks trained on pairs of color photos and their grayscale conversions. During training, the model learns a mapping: "given this luminance pattern, what colors are statistically most likely here?"

At inference time, the model takes your black-and-white image and outputs a full RGB prediction. Some advanced models let you hint colors manually; the Aliyun VIAPI version is fully automatic for speed and simplicity.

Because colorization is a prediction problem (not a lookup), results can vary. A 1940s wool suit might come out navy, charcoal, or brown — all plausible. If you don't like the first result, you can try again with a cropped or rotated version to nudge the model toward a different interpretation.

Limitations to Know Before You Colorize

AI colorization is impressive but not magical. A few honest caveats:

  • Colors are guesses, not facts. The model doesn't know the actual hue of someone's shirt — it picks a reasonable one based on training data.
  • Uniforms and flags can be wrong. A WWII military uniform's precise branch colors often can't be inferred from grayscale alone.
  • Badly damaged originals produce badly damaged color. Scratches, mold spots, and faded regions colorize just as imperfectly as they look in B&W.
  • Skin tones can drift toward too-orange or too-pale on ambiguous lighting. The Enhance Photo tool can sometimes help rebalance afterward.

For best results, start with the cleanest, highest-resolution scan you can get. If the original is torn or faded, consider restoring it first (or running it through our Enhance Photo tool).

What image formats can I colorize?

JPG, PNG, and BMP. The output is always PNG to preserve smooth color gradients. WebP, GIF, and HEIC aren't supported by the upstream Aliyun API — convert them first using our Image to JPG tool.

What's the maximum file size?

10 MB and 3000 × 3000 px. Larger images will be rejected at upload — use Resize Image or Compress Image first.

Will the colors be historically accurate?

No. AI colorization produces plausible colors based on patterns the model learned from modern photos. It's an artistic interpretation, not a forensic reconstruction. If historical accuracy matters (e.g., for a documentary), verify colors against other sources.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

Yes. Colorize Photo is an AI tool, so the image is sent to our AI provider (Aliyun VIAPI in Shanghai). The file is processed in memory and deleted within 5 minutes. We don't store, share, or use it for training. For 100% local processing, use the browser-based tools under Edit instead.

Can I colorize multiple photos at once?

Not yet. Colorize Photo currently handles one image per session. Batch processing is on the roadmap.
