Enhance Photo
Boost color, contrast, and clarity in faded or low-saturation photos with AI.
How To Enhance a Photo
Upload
Select a JPG, PNG, or BMP image (up to 3 MB). Works best on photos that look washed-out, hazy, or low-saturation.
Choose Mode
Pick a mode — Rec709 for most photos, LogC for flat / log footage, or Boost for a stronger saturation lift. Then choose PNG (lossless) or JPG (smaller).
Download
Click Enhance Photo and preview the result side-by-side with the original. If you like it, click Download to save.
What Does It Mean to Enhance a Photo?
Photo enhancement means using AI to improve the perceived quality of an image without changing its content. The Aliyun VIAPI EnhanceImageColor model we use analyzes the existing color and tonal distribution, then rebalances saturation, contrast, and clarity to make the image look more vivid and clean.
Unlike upscaling (which adds new pixels) or restoration (which removes damage), enhancement keeps the original resolution and content. Think of it as a one-click "make this look better" pass that's especially effective on photos that look slightly washed-out, hazy, or under-saturated.
Three Enhancement Modes
EnhanceImageColor exposes three color space modes. Each produces a subtly different result — pick the one that looks best on your image:
| Mode | Best for | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Rec709 (default) | Everyday photos, portraits, landscapes | Standard color space — natural-looking boost that respects the original look. |
| LogC | Flat / log video frames, RAW-look stills | Pulls up shadow detail and rebalances low-contrast footage. |
| ln17_256 (Boost) | Heavily faded or under-saturated photos | Stronger saturation and clarity lift — closer to an HDR look. |
If you're unsure which mode to use, start with Rec709. If the result still looks flat, try Boost. If the shadows look crushed, try LogC.
Common Use Cases
- Old scans: Magazine clippings, faded prints, and book scans often look dull — Enhance brings them back to life.
- Smartphone shots in bad light: Indoor or overcast photos that look grey and muddy can be salvaged.
- Product photography: E-commerce listings benefit from punchier colors and crisper edges.
- Travel and landscape: Sky and foliage often look more vivid after enhancement.
- Wedding and event photographers: Quick first-pass color boost before deeper editing in Lightroom or Capture One.
- Content creators: Blog headers and YouTube thumbnails often need that extra pop.
Enhance Photo vs. Upscale Image — What's the Difference?
These two AI tools are complementary, not overlapping:
- Enhance Photo improves color and contrast at the same resolution. Use it when the image looks washed-out or muddy but the size is fine.
- Upscale Image increases resolution by 2× or 4× while reconstructing detail. Use it when the image is too small or soft.
For badly degraded photos, run them through Enhance first (to fix color), then Upscale (to add detail). The order matters — Enhance works on existing pixels, Upscale invents new ones.
Limitations to Know
Enhancement is powerful but not a cure-all:
- It can't fix blur. Motion blur, missed focus, and camera shake are resolution problems, not color problems. Try Upscale Image or a dedicated deconvolution tool.
- It can't add detail that isn't there. A blank sky stays a blank sky, just slightly more saturated.
- Color cast may shift. Some photos have a deliberate warm or cool cast that enhancement may normalize away. If you want the original mood, re-apply the cast in any editor afterward.
- Skin tones can drift slightly toward orange on Boost mode. Rec709 mode is the safe choice for portraits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Enhance Photo free?
Yes. Free users can run up to 3 AI image tool calls per day across all AI tools combined (Enhance / Colorize / Remove Watermark / Upscale / Remove Background). Sign in for higher limits; VIP tier coming soon.
What's the difference between the three modes?
Rec709 is the standard color space for most photos and gives a natural-looking boost. LogC is designed for flat / log footage and lifts shadow detail. Boost (ln17_256) applies a stronger saturation and clarity lift for faded images.
PNG or JPG output?
PNG is lossless and best if you plan to do further editing. JPG is smaller and fine for direct sharing or web upload. The visual difference in the enhanced result is minimal.
What formats are accepted as input?
JPG, PNG, and BMP up to 3 MB. WebP, GIF, and HEIC aren't supported by the upstream Aliyun API — convert them first with Image to JPG.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
Yes. Enhance Photo is an AI tool, so the image is sent to our AI provider (Aliyun VIAPI in Shanghai). The file is processed in memory and deleted within 5 minutes. We never store, share, or use your images for training. For 100% local processing, use the browser-based tools under Edit instead.
Can Enhance Photo fix a blurry photo?
No — blur is a resolution / detail problem, not a color problem. Try our Upscale Image tool instead, which uses super-resolution to reconstruct lost detail.
