What Does It Mean to Unblur a Photo?

"Unblur" means reversing the loss of detail that makes a photo look soft or smeared. Blur happens when light from a single point spreads across multiple sensor pixels — from camera shake during exposure, subject motion, missed focus, or lens softness. Traditional sharpening filters (like Photoshop's Unsharp Mask) push local contrast at edges, which can look harsh and doesn't actually recover lost detail.

ImgShift uses the Aliyun VIAPI GenerateSuperResolutionImage model — a generative diffusion-based super-resolution network. Instead of just sharpening edges, it predicts what the missing high-frequency detail probably looked like (skin pores, hair strands, fabric weave, brick texture) and synthesizes new pixels that are plausible given the surrounding context.

How Generative Super-Resolution Works

Traditional super-resolution (like the bicubic upscale in any image editor) takes a small image and invents new pixels by interpolating between existing ones. The result is bigger but blurrier — no new information was added.

Generative super-resolution is fundamentally different. The model was trained on millions of paired (low-res, high-res) image patches. Given a blurry input, it doesn't just interpolate — it asks "given this pattern, what high-frequency detail is statistically most likely here?" and synthesizes that detail.

The result is genuinely sharper, with new texture that wasn't visible in the source. The trade-off: synthesized detail is the model's best guess, not a perfect reconstruction. For faces, fabric, and natural textures it's usually convincing. For text, license plates, and known logos it can hallucinate plausible-looking-but-wrong detail.

Scale Factor: 1× vs 2× vs 4×

Unlike traditional upscale tools (which only enlarge), our Unblur tool has four scale modes:

  • — Rebuild detail at the original resolution. Output is the same pixel size as input, but with sharpened detail. Best when the source is already the right size but just blurry.
  • (default) — Rebuild detail AND double resolution. Best all-rounder for typical photos and screenshots.
  • — Triple resolution. Useful for very small source images (200×200 px thumbnail → 600×600).
  • — Quadruple resolution. Maximum reconstruction but slowest (can take 30+ seconds on large images).

Unblur vs. Upscale — What's the Difference?

ImgShift has both. They're complementary, not redundant:

  • Unblur Image (this tool) uses a generative model. It synthesizes new detail and is best on blurry photos (motion blur, soft focus).
  • Upscale Image uses a traditional super-resolution model. It's faster, cheaper, and best on small but sharp photos (thumbnails, low-res graphics) where you just need more pixels, not new detail.

Rule of thumb: if the source looks blurry, use Unblur. If the source looks sharp but small, use Upscale.

Limitations to Know

  • Generative hallucination. On text, license plates, logos, and known faces the model may synthesize plausible-but-wrong detail. Don't rely on it for forensic use.
  • Severe blur can't be fully reversed. If information was completely smeared (e.g., 2-second exposure while running), no model can perfectly recover it.
  • Faces at small sizes may come out looking "idealized" — the model's guess at generic facial detail rather than the actual person's features.
  • Processing time is 10-30 seconds per image (vs. ~3 seconds for Upscale). The generative model is heavier.
  • Resolution cap. Source must have shortest side ≤ 1080 px and longest ≤ 5000 px. Larger images need to be downscaled first.

Is unblurring free?

Yes. Free users can run up to 20 AI image tool calls per day across all AI tools combined (Unblur / Colorize / Upscale / Remove Background) during our launch testing window. The limit will tighten as we exit testing.

What's the difference between Unblur and Sharpen?

Sharpening (e.g., Unsharp Mask in Photoshop) increases local contrast at edges to make an image look sharper — but no new detail is added. Unblur uses a generative model to predict and synthesize the missing high-frequency detail. Sharpening amplifies what's there; unblurring reconstructs what should be there.

Why is it slower than Upscale Image?

The generative diffusion model is much heavier than the traditional super-resolution network used by /upscale-image/. Typical processing: 10-30 seconds vs. 3-5 seconds. We show a progress overlay so you know it's working.

What file formats are accepted?

JPG, PNG, and BMP up to 20 MB. Source resolution: shortest side ≤ 1080 px, longest side ≤ 5000 px. Output format defaults to PNG (lossless); JPG is available for smaller files.

Can it fix extremely blurry photos?

Up to a point. Heavy motion blur usually improves significantly. Completely smeared exposures (1+ second with major camera movement) won't fully recover — the original information is genuinely lost.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

Yes. Unblur is an AI tool, so the image is sent to our AI provider (Aliyun VIAPI in Shanghai). The file is processed in memory and deleted within 5 minutes. We never store, share, or use it for training. For 100% local processing, use the browser-based tools under Edit.
